Why is a Bike Fit Essential?

There are many reasons why all cyclists need a bike fit - the key ones being optimising performance & minimising the risk of injury.  David is highly experienced in bike fitting & has conducted fits for all types of cyclists as a Sports Physiotherapist for over a decade.   Your bike fit is one of the most important investments you can make in your cycling experience.  Here are a couple of reasons to consider a bike fit:

  • To improve performance via improved power, aerodynamics, or muscle mechanics
  • Muscle mechanics means placing your muscles in their optimal length-tension relationship, which enables peak power production in a cycling context
  • Improved posture - which allows optimisation of muscle mechanics, power delivery & breathing
  • To eliminate discomfort or pain
  • It's simply cheaper to fit your bike properly in the first place than to become injured & have to fix a preventable problem
  • Your competitors are properly fit to their bikes. You need to be if you are to compete on level terms with them

You should never be uncomfortable because of your position. If your position is uncomfortable then it simply isn't the correct position for you

Bike Fitting Process

Comprehensive Professional Results

An initial bike fit  takes approx. 2hrs:


KNOW THE ATHLETE & THEIR MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM FIRST: 

  • Individual measurements such as anthropometry (arm, leg, torso lengths), flexibility & strength are taken


UNDERSTAND & TEST THE INTERACTION BETWEEN CYCLIST & BIKE:

  • Both your bike and your kinematics (joint angles / motion) are measured & tested
  • Component selection is advised and may be trialled (for example your saddle)
  • Your position is adjusted with respect to your musculoskeletal capabilities we measured, your cycling goals, and in conjunction with real-time feedback provided by the athlete
  • A digital report is sent for your records (handy to have when travelling to events)
